La Posada hotel
"The last great railway hotel" designed by Architect Mary Colter for the
Fred Harvey Company along the Sante Fe Railway. La Posada was designed
to be an outpost to the natural and cultural wonders of the Grand Canyon,
Monument Valley, and the Navajo and Hopi Indian reservations.
La Posada is one of the few hotels of its era to survive; its revival involved
restoration of some parts and reconstruction and adaptation of others. The
design balances historical accuracy with the requirements of a modern hotel,
all planned according to sustainable principles.
Today, La Posada is one of the finest hotels and restaurants in Arizona, and
has led a revival of downtown Winslow.
