since 1983,
Kiss + Cathcart has been a leader in the integration of photovoltaic
(PV) technology and architectural design. PVs, which produce electricity
from sunlight, are intrinsically visible elements that have direct architectural
implications. They can be used as building materials, adding value by
performing simultaneously as enclosure and energy source. While capturing
sunlight, they can shade windows, divert summer heat, and provide diffuse
daylighting.
PVs will
change the energy paradigm of contemporary buildings from one that attempts
to mitigate the effects of the sun to one that turns outward, gathering
as much solar radiation as possible. For the first time, buildings will
shift from consuming to producing energy.
