As part of an eight-hour design charrette, Kiss + Cathcart and students from
City College of New York produced this proposal for the redesign of the
major subway intersection at Union Square in Manhattan.
An underutilized traffic island is reimagined as an open triangular court which
provides light, orientation, and clarity to the subway junction.
A monumental viewing tower terminates the axis up Park Avenue to
Grand Central Station, and a sweeping stair up from the park provides
a new stage for urban pleasures.
