urban design

Kiss + Cathcart's urban design practice hinges on the recognition that simultaneous mixed-use makes cities great places to live and work. Consequently, we maintain that no neighborhood should be designed without places of work, and that no place of work should be cut off from its neighborhood.

Many of our projects have addressed the widespread -- and destructive -- urban design and zoning practices of segregating residential and work uses. Drawing on existing precedents where housing, offices, and even light industrial facilities sit side-by-side, we have proposed new, hybrid urban layouts where multiple uses can coexist and flourish.

We believe that research and invention, rather than re-creation and nostalgia, are the most effective tools for urban design. We must adjust our cities to serve the highest goals of today, with an eye toward an even better future.
